Loss of left parties in Bengal and Kerala suddenly send a wave of sadness in me. In fact, in my whole life I always hated left ideology. After a day of shocking result, I am trying to understand why I am sad for loss of left parties. Is it about realization of inefficiency of incoming alternate government of congress or TMC in Bengal and Kerala in dealing with peoples problem and their aspiration or just after a year of stay in USA understood relevance of an effective left in polity to balance policy decision , I am not sure. But definitely it is a sad moment in indian democracy where we are seeing large scale decline of left. But interestingly decline of left parties are seen at a time when left thinking oriented public advocacy groups are getting stronger and acting as interface between government and people. Recent success of Food security act , Rural job guarantee schemes , RTI acts and now lokpal Bill is result of strong pushing for such advocacy groups which increases government’s social commitment and pushes policy direction towards Center-left . Coming back to my sadness, I tried to understand why left is losing worldwide? Let me acknowledge that this is a really difficult question for a trained and practicing molecular biologist to understand. Then I tried to rephrase my question and asked why I disliked left parties in Kerala? I felt that left is alienated from the people and reality long back. They are more concern about polland and but where never thought about changing aspiration of average keralaites. When average keralaites or Bengalis saw that states like Bihar and Haryana is going ahead of them in employment, infrastructure and getting better development, they attributed this to hindrance created by left policies. Truly Left Policy implementation is the greatest problem. Manly so called self-proclaimed left intellectuals should be blamed for this disaster. They believe that they have a quick fix for all problems and create greater problems in turn. Let me give you an example. In Kerala, Left Intellectuals suggested a quick fix solution to increase paddy production and area under paddy cultivation. “Do not allow any other crop in paddy field”. As being an agriculture graduate, I do realize that decreasing paddy acreage is indeed a big problem but same time I do realize that it is a complex multidimensional issue. As my understanding goes, decreasing paddy acreage is mainly due to High cost of labour, lack of possibility for mechanization due to small holding size and lack of labours for farm operations on time. So quick fix suggested by left parties reflects their complete lack of empathy about farmers and farming situation. Interestingly some of these problems are creation of left movement which created a right conscious labour force but forgot to inculcate sense of duty. Other major problem with problem with left rule is highly partisan behavior of government. Government tends to favour left cadre and forget their obligation towards partisan neutrality. High handness of left cadres most of the time create law order problems. Currently rampant corruption in left leaders makes left parties no different from other parties.
At this juncture, it is important that we should pray for revival of left forces with newly found root in indian soil with better understanding. Left parties should reinvent their heroes and put Lenin, Stalin and Mao in backburner and bring in local ideals and inspiration to understand and connect with local people.
PS : Recently I was watching a movie titled ”Arabikattha”. I have seen and meet people like Sreenivasan’s character. I thought How much disconnect is there between , karats , yaturies and local people.
